Trump Accounts Explained

Course Overview:

Trump Accounts represent one of the most significant additions to the federal landscape of tax-advantaged savings and long-term investment planning in recent years. Established under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and codified in Internal Revenue Code Section 530A, these accounts create new opportunities for accounting and financial professionals to assist individuals, families, employers, and business owners with long-term wealth accumulation, tax planning, employee benefit design, and multigenerational financial planning. Because the statutory framework continues to be implemented through Treasury regulations, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) guidance, and administrative procedures, practitioners must understand both the legislative requirements and the evolving regulatory environment when advising clients.

This course provides a comprehensive examination of the statutory and regulatory framework governing Trump Accounts. Participants will develop an understanding of eligibility requirements, account establishment procedures, contribution limitations, funding sources, investment restrictions, tax treatment, distribution rules, compliance responsibilities, and practical planning considerations. The course also examines employer contribution opportunities, account administration, documentation requirements, and the professional responsibilities associated with advising clients in an evolving area of federal tax law.

Recognizing that no single savings vehicle is appropriate for every client, the course compares Trump Accounts with other commonly used tax-advantaged savings and investment vehicles, including 529 education savings plans, Roth IRAs, Traditional IRAs, Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) accounts, Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA) accounts, Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), ABLE accounts, and taxable brokerage accounts. Participants will evaluate the relative advantages, limitations, tax consequences, and planning applications of each alternative while learning how Trump Accounts may be integrated into comprehensive financial, tax, retirement, education, and estate planning strategies.

Throughout the course, participants are encouraged to apply professional judgment when evaluating client recommendations. Each instructional module includes a Professional Judgment Alert highlighting important advisory considerations, compliance risks, documentation responsibilities, and areas where individualized analysis is essential. These alerts reinforce the importance of verifying statutory requirements, monitoring current Treasury and IRS guidance, coordinating recommendations with each client's overall financial circumstances, and avoiding standardized planning approaches in favor of well-supported professional recommendations.

The course concludes with three comprehensive case studies illustrating how Trump Accounts may be incorporated into practical advisory engagements involving young families, business owners implementing employer contribution programs, and grandparents pursuing multigenerational wealth transfer strategies. Each case study includes a Learning Activity designed to reinforce technical concepts and encourage participants to apply the statutory framework to realistic client situations requiring professional analysis and judgment.

Upon completion of this course, accounting and financial professionals will possess the technical knowledge and practical planning skills necessary to evaluate Trump Accounts as part of a comprehensive advisory engagement, communicate the benefits and limitations of the program to clients, maintain compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and incorporate these accounts into sound long-term financial planning strategies while remaining responsive to future legislative, Treasury, and IRS developments.
