The IRS, working with the Security Summit partners, has released an updated Written Information Security Plan (WISP) to help tax professionals protect sensitive client data. The new WISP template, found in Publication 5708, offers a practical framework for establishing safeguards against identity theft and cybercrime.
The plan is part of the ongoing Protect Your Clients; Protect Yourself campaign. It is designed to help even the smallest firms meet their obligations under federal law to have a written security plan in place.
Why it matters:
Strengthens your practice’s ability to defend against data breaches.
Provides step-by-step guidance for compliance.
Helps meet Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Safeguards Rule requirements.
